In future Germany is to step up its support for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali. As of February, up to 1,000 German soldiers can be deployed within the framework of the UN mission.

Bundeswehr troops are to continue to train the Peshmerga and Iraq’s armed forces. The German government has decided to extend the assignment in northern Iraq. Germany is thus stepping up its fight against the terrorist organisation IS.

  • History of the Federal Ministry of Defence

    The so-called Amt Blank became the Federal Ministry of Defence on 7 June 1955. Shortly before this date, the Federal Republic of Germany had acceded to NATO. The Federal Ministry of Defence is thus one of the younger ministries of the Federal Government. It can nevertheless look back on a very eventful history.
